Screen And Roll

Not too long ago, my family and I got a very hard lesson from life! My Uncle, Ruben Locke Jr. had suddenly died of a massive heart attach while jogging. This guy looked to be in perfect shape. My uncle exercised and ate right! Did all the things a young man at the age of 53 is suppose to do, except have annual check ups with a doctor! He let a couple of years slip past him with deadly results! If my uncle had made it to the doctor’s office, a simple check up or health screen probably would have caught his falling heart, giving the doctors a chance to operate and fix the problem! Which in turn would have extended his life, and he would still be with us today! I got the message from my uncle’s lesson loud and clear!

My family has a long history of Cancer on my dad’s side! My great grand father died of cancer. So did my grand mother. My father got colon cancer at the age of 53! I’m a pretty fit guy! I play basketball on a regular basis to stay in good shape! I workout and I eat fairly good compared to most! Thinking about my uncle, this year at the age of 43, I decided to take my health seriously! I set up multiple check ups with my doctor! Regular physical and blood test! All came back with excellent results! I was healthy as a horse! But a couple years earlier, my doctor had suggested I do a health screen to check for colon cancer because of my family history! He was especially concerned with my father’s colon cancer and said we should do a colonoscopy, which in a nutshell is a test to check for cancers in your colon. They go through your butt hole, for lack of a better word! It’s a little uncomfortable, but it’s usually over before you know it! I had blown off this test for like two years, because my annual physical exams kept coming back with excellent results! But this time, I wanted to cover all the basis, and thinking about what happened to my uncle, I finally scheduled the colonscopy examine!
My Uncle Ruben Jr and his son Ruben 3

I took the health examine! Then headed to Florida with my boy for his national football championship games! It was snowing in Chicago when I left Midway airport! When I got to Florida, it was 70 degrees with a warm breeze! I let opened the sunroof then proceeded to enjoy my week with my family in Florida! When we got back from Florida, it was still snowing, but more importantly, I had three phone messages from my doctor’s office! When I finally called him back, he had informed me that I had colon cancer! Disappointing but no real surprise! He said we caught the cancer very early, thanks to the colonoscopy screening! Once I got past the shock of having cancer, I realized that the screen test did exactly what it was suppose to do! Catch the cancer early so we can do something about it and have a positive outcome! The positive outcome of course was extending my life! By being proactive, I would have a chance to grow old with my family!

Because we caught the cancer early on, my prognosis for the future was great! The game plan was simple! Through surgery, the doctors would cut out the cancer in my colon! I would need a week in the hospital to recover. Then about two months at home to heal up back to 100%! Before the surgery, I had to do a bunch of things to get ready for the surgery! I had to take a CT scan to make sure the cancer didn’t spread! I also had to give a lot of blood to help the doctors check for more changes in my body! I also had to consult with an Oncology specialist and a general surgeon! We would make game plans for post surgery, which thankfully did not include any chemo or radiation treatments! Finally, there’s the nasty bowel prep that was the worst stuff I have ever tasted! Helps to clear out your colon for the procedure if you know what I mean! I don’t remember anything about the surgery! But I was in a lot of pain afterwards. But considering colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths, the little pain I was suffering was a small price to pay for a chance to live a long and health life!

The hospital stay was long and lonely! It was cold out and I was in a lot of pain! But I got more support than I could have ever imagined! I got lots of phone calls and texts! Got lots of prayers too! You need support when you go through a major life event like this! Now I’m back at home and halfway through my recovery! No more pain. I just now have to work on my strength and endurance! My fantasy basketball league starts up at the end of March! Will be tough for me to be in game shape by then, but again, I’m cancer free, alive, and healthy! The moral of the story is get your check ups and health screens if you want to stay alive! I’m trying to be a good example especially to older men who can sometimes be stubborn and neglectful when it comes to health issues! Don’t ignore them! Or you could pay for it with your life! God Bless!

Premiere Hoops Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Premiere Hoops Storms the Court with Fantasy Programs, Giving Players the NBA Basketball Experience of a Lifetime

Competitive, character-building recreational leagues offer affordable alternative to AAU ball

PLAINFIELD, Ill., Sept. 24, 2013 – Announcing the start of its 15th season, Premiere Hoops (www.playforrings.com) continues to be among the best recreational basketball programs in greater Chicago, with leagues designed for boys and men. In the Maywood area, boys can participate in the Fantasy Combine, which is a feeder program for the next level of competition. Fantasy Development Leagues are held in Glen Ellyn and Downers Grove, while men's Open League games are played in Downers Grove. The complete rundown of leagues is available here: http://www.playforrings.com/Leagues.html.

"Our goal at Premiere Hoops is to give players with hoop dreams a chance to realize those dreams," explained President Bill Leach. "The programs we offer are designed for boys and men who have a passion for the game. But it's more than just a game: we use basketball as a tool to teach kids important life skills and values. By fostering hard work and dedication, we help players work toward their ultimate goals."

Structured in large part like the NBA, the authenticity of Premiere Hoops is what makes it more than the average recreational basketball program. Leagues begin with a short pre-season camp, followed by a draft. Experienced, volunteer coaches will provide hands-on personal training, giving every player the opportunity to maximize their innate talents. Each team wears real NBA uniforms and play for real championship rings and a trophy.

The future looks bright for Premiere Hoops. The company has plans to secure a third site for its Fantasy Development League in 2014, bringing the total to four. On the drawing board as well is a dedicated basketball training center. Finally, Premiere Hoops looks to break into the AAU circuit next year; two fully sponsored fantasy league all-star teams will take the court for the spring season, complete with custom uniforms, shoes, travel bags, professional coaching staff and more.

Premiere Hoops Power Rankings Week 4

So the 14th season of the Premiere Hoops Fantasy League ends like this huh? Clippers finally go out on top! They dropped their first two Finals attempts! Make it to their third Finals in a row and make a fantastic break through! This was by far the best season ever for the Fantasy League! A lot of good teams joined the club this season and made the league pretty competitive! We hope to build on that success for next season by adding a few more quality ball clubs! But for now, this season belongs to the Clippers! Hail to the Clippers! Hail to the Champs!! The final power rankings ended as follows:

The Clippers have been rocking with Premiere Hoops for many years now! A talented bunch of cats from Elgin! These are some good dudes man, a the way around!! They have made it to the Fantasy League Finals the past three years! They finally break through with their first championship against a team I thought they just could not beat! Good team with a couple of good young studs that should keep them in Finals contention for seasons to come!

Another good squad here! This team is composed of some of the best ball players in the city of Chicago, hands down! They are never out of a ball game and they never quit until the final whistle blows! The defending champs from last season, had a tough road to the finals! I thought that once they made it to the championship round, they would somehow find a way to slip past their rival Clippers, once more, to repeat as champs! But this season belonged to the Clippers! We'll see if these guys will return to reclaim their title!

The Bulls by far had their best team and best season in years! They did it with a nice mix of young talent and savvy vets to give teams match up nightmares! This team has a lot to look forward to in the near future, if they can make one or two smart off season moves with personnel! If they can add the right pieces and find the right mix of talent, then maybe next season the Bulls will be playing for their first Fantasy League championship!

The Lakers this season seem to do the best job out of the four new sub teams to join the club! They started the season read hot! Beating all comers with a good mix of power ball down in the post and athletic youthfulness that had them playing wonderful basketball! But the Fantasy League can be a long season! Loose a couple of key players, then hit the playoffs not playing your best ball and in a blink of the eye, the season is over! This is another good squad I hope to see back, with changes!

Here's another good squad I really liked! This team has a couple of good bigs and a slew of flat out good players who can match up with any team on any given night! This was one of the best organizations in the league as well! They showed up to all the games, on time, didn't complain much, and followed directions! I loved how this team got down! And they supported the league with cash patronage! What more could you ask for....but more teams like these cats to join the club!!!

Here's another good Sub squad that's much like Golden State! Good players who show up every game ready to play! They follow directions and patronage the league with cash! The league needs more teams like this one to be successful and beneficial to everyone involved! This is a dangerous team when everybody shows up for work! They play hard every night and look for wins every time they step on the court! That's what you want from all of your teams!

The Brooklyn Nets struggled in their first season of the Fantasy League! A collection of tough players are not enough to get you through a league like ours! Going through an entire season with no wins is no fun! But in order for this team to get better they first have to become a better organization! Lots of loose ends with this squad makes for a ship not built for trouble waters! Nets have to build a solid foundation before they are ready to come back for another season with us! They're starting from the bottom!

We always seem to have problems with any team trying to be the Celtics! For whatever reason, they always seem to drop out of the league during the regular season! The same problem occurred this season as we tried to clump together a bunch of free agents which almost never seems to work! I think next season we will ban any team from being the Celtics! We already have teams lining up to replace them for next season!

OKC beats the field then beats the odds on it's way to their first championship! While doing so, they become only the third team in our 14 year history to win the regular season championship, with an undefeated record, then move on to win the Finals! The other teams would win the regular season championship then move on to loose the Finals! Another record was broken this season during the Finals! For the first time one team lost the championship two years in a row! Los Angeles! Last year they were the Lakers! This season they were the Clippers! Both times they lost! This season was true heart break, as they were the only team to beat the Thunder this season! The championship series was competitive! Going the full three games! In the end, the Thunder just wanted it more! OKC fought it's way back from big leads and sometimes each other, but when it was said and done, the Thunder was the better team of the series and the best team of the season!

Congrats to Pierre Monagan who grabs Finals MVP honors! An excellent all around player, Pee did what needed to be done to get his squad on point! A good outside shooter, he didn't settle for jump shots when it was money time! Pierre attacked the basket! And did it often! He kicked his team in the pants when they played bad! Patted guys on the back when they played good! Took over when it was necessary! And fell back when he had to! A work of art that lead to his squad capturing the hardware!

Now OKC will have a chance to defend their crown next season at the McCook Expo, with their newly installed wood floor! Not that fake tile trash we use to practice and scrimmage on! We'll look to start in January of 2013. With this spot being closer to the West side `and the start time being pushed back one hour, we should be able to find some committed teams who want a chance to de-thrown the Thunder! We'll take the month of December off for the holidays and to recruit some competitive teams to add to the mix! Thanks to all who played this season! Got big plans coming in 2013! Be on the lookout!

The Play-Offs Are Coming!!

Let's get ready for the play-offs! Here's how we will move forward to the post-season! We have one more weekend of regular season games to play this weekend, October 27, 2012! Here's the match-ups:

08:30 AM LA vs Suns
09:30 AM Denver vs OKC
10:30 AM Bobcats vs Bulls

OKC is the regular season champs! Also, OKC and Denver has earned first rounds buys! The play-off schedule for the first round is already up! Take a peek here:

http://premierehoops.leagueapps.com/leagues/7678/schedule

We'll start the first round on November 3, 2012! The match-ups will be:

LA vs Suns
Bulls vs Bobcats

To advance to the second round, two teams will have to win 2 out of 3 games! So, on November 3, each team will play 2 games! If each team splits wins, meaning win 1 game loose 1 game, then both teams will have to play the deciding game 3 on the following week on November 10, 2012! Then be ready to start the second round with game 1 on the same day! Please keep in mind that on each game day of the play-offs, you will have to pay ref fees twice, for 2 games! So make sure your team has $100 for each day!

Remember, we are playing for championship rings, a team trophy and a chance to return and defend your crown for free next season at the Max! No teams should think about bringing any new players we have not already seen throughout the regular season! This is the tough part of the season, where things feel a little more like the NBA! Hope you guys are excited and ready to roll! Time to find out if OKC can close the deal out and win the Finals! Or will another team get hot at the right moment and steal the crown! Time will tell!

Bobcats bob and weave their way to first Fantasy Championship!

Another season of the Premiere Hoops Fantasy League has come to an end! And another championship team has been crowned the best! Congrats to the Charlotte Bobcats! They did just enough to squeeze by the competition to steal the title! The runner up Lakers became yet another squad in a long list of teams that would find a way  to win the regular season title, then advance to the finals, only to loose the set of games that matters the most! The finals was a physical match up between two teams determined not to loose, but in the end, only one squad would walk away with the championship hardware! This season, that team would be the Bobcats!

As we close out our 12th season of the fantasy league, a few thoughts of perspective! First of all, I would like to once again thank all the teams who played this season! I would like to send out a special thanks to all the team captains who I worked with throughout the course of the season! You guys did a good job of getting your teams to the games when we needed them the most! I want to also thank my staff, Robin Locke, Nancy Johnson, and Twain Jackson, for their hard work and dedication throughout the season! You guys made a big difference and I appreciate your efforts! I would like to also apologize for all the rescheduled games this season! No excuses, but sometimes things are out of your hands and control! Despite all the bumps in the road this season, we made it through! Now that everybody has gotten a test drive of the league, expectations will be much higher for the upcoming season! As we hopefully move closer to the day Premiere Hoops the Sports Complex opens, we will work harder to make Premiere Hoops the Fantasy League more like the NBA experience you guys have come to expect from us!

The next season will be even better as we will look to move to a new location on the south side of Chicago! The Kroc Center off 119th street! This place will blow your mind for real! The basketball courts will remind you of the United Center, and with good reason, because the Chicago Bulls donated the floor, complete with Bulls logo, scoreboards, and shot clocks are on order and on the way! This place is complete state of the art, and there is too much there for me to describe in this article! Everybody will be expected to raise their game up! From the registration process, to the rules of the games, to the competition levels, this is shaping up to be the best Fantasy league yet! Stay tuned!

OKC eyes upset of regular season champs!

OKC didn't take the easy road to the second round of the Premiere Hoops Fantasy League Play-offs! During the regular season, their record was a mere 2-6. That kept the Thunder towards the bottom of the standings, but this appeared to be a better team on paper! And so they enter the play-offs and the sudden death round, along with the Knicks, Heat, and Mavs! Each team had their opportunities to win and advance! But in the end, here's a recap of how the Thunder eventually beat the others to the finish line!

Knicks vs Heat

The great thing about the play-offs in any sport, is the second chance factor! In others words, the start of a new season within a season! Everybody goes back to 0-0! And so the Knicks vs the Heat was a great match up! Both teams went back and fourth, down to the wire! When the smoke cleared, the Knicks had secured a 70-64 victory! Looked ready to claim that 4 seed date with the Lakers!

Mavs vs Thunder

This game was a mirror of the first game! The team photos with the championship rings must have given everybody a sense of urgency, because the games were very competitive! The Thunder showed to the game with all their key players for the first time this season! And it made a big difference! The Mavs showed up short handed and they suffered for it! In the end, the Thunder had the horses to hold off the young Mavs for a 77-70 victory!

Thunder vs Knicks

Here's what makes the Premiere Hoops Fantasy League different and in my humble opinion and better than other leagues! The two games in one day factor! Any team can get lucky and win one game in a day! But can you muster up the strength to win two games in one day! Now, you have to play against your opponent and your stamina! That second game is no puck, and especially for teams who dare show up for battle short handed, like the Knicks choose to do all season long! NY on more than one occasion, would show up late to games, pick up a few standby players on the sidelines, and then proceed to find ways to win games! But their luck would run out against the Thunder. The Thunder squad at full strength would eventually ware down this tired team and pull away with a 66-46 victory!

Next week's double elimination games should be even better than this past weekends single elimination games, as the Thunder take on the Lakers followed by the Bulls and Bobcats! This round will be the best 2 out of 3 games and the winners from both match ups will eventually face off in the finals!
